In this play the off line step is like a lunge. I'm reminded of Meyer who says that to cut at the level of the leg, you must lower your shoulder to the heigth of leg.

We can cheat this somewhat with the buckler, but the basic advice is solid.


Leoni writes in a footnote that the sideways falso is from right to left. However, with the wide-offline step that doesn't make any sense. So instead we send it left to right, after which the blade circles around to the overarm position ready for another riverso.
