Plate 53 seems more appropriate for the riposte. This may simply be an error in the text.

In other plays, the phrase "over the arm" refers or implies an attack from the outside. This supports the 'wrong plate' claim, especially if you read it as not literally being "over the arm" but rather just his way of indicating which side to start on.
