The key phrase in the text is “stiff arm”. Note how the arm is extended in plates 6 and 7. Not locked, but pushed out so as to provide more protection and a greater threat.

Another point to keep in mind is that the blade is not horizontal. While the amount of angle can vary, a perfectly straight sword creates a weak posture. (Unless you are also lowering the body as per Fabris.) You can test this by having a partner push straight back on your hilt with an empty hand.
